Amoa-Awuah is dead

Mr Kwaku Amoa-Awuah, a former Minister of the First Republic and a Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, passed away on January 23, 2015. He was 88. 

He was a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and later moved to the Ministry of Finance as Deputy Minister. He served there until 1960 when the then President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, moved him to serve in other ministries such as Social Welfare, Light and Heavy Industries, Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Economic Planning Secretariat. 

In 1964, he was appointed Minister of Labour with special reference to the Ghana Trades Union Congress. He was responsible for the enactment of the Industrial Relation Act 1965 and the institution of a Joint Annual Meeting of the Trades Union Congress, the Employers Association and the Ministry of Labour. He served at the Economic and Development Secretariat as well.

Until December last year, he was the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Convention People’s Party. In private life, Mr Amoa-Awuah was a businessman.

He will be laid to rest on February 6, 2015.
