De-politicise COVID-19 fight — Catholic Bishops

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has stressed the need to de-politicise the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Catholic Bishops, the coronavirus had no political colour nor preference.

It said following the successful meetings between the President and the various religious leaders and leaders of political parties in Ghana, “it remains our hope that all Ghanaians will unite and collaborate as citizens of our dear nation to do what is expected of us to help contain the spread of the virus in the country.”

This was contained in an Easter message signed by the President of the GCBC, Most Reverend Philip Naameh, who is also the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale.

It quoted Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson admonishing the world that “For each person, believer or nonbeliever, this is a good time to understand the value of brotherhood, of being linked to one another in an indissoluble way.”

Introspection

It said God was inviting everyone to make an introspection into their lives as individuals, as a nation and as a world.

“We all need to retrace our steps to the Lord and live as salt of the earth and light of the world to effect a change in our world. This is what it means to live as people of the resurrection. Let us change our way of life for the better and bear the fragrance of Jesus who died and rose again; for when a person is in Christ, the old is gone and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17),” it stated.

Future with Hope

The statement said the GCBC was optimistic that God would soon eradicate the pandemic entirely from among the people.

It urged Ghanaians not to live in fear for the resurrected Christ admonished the people not to be afraid, stressing that “His peace is not one that will allow us to stay behind closed doors”.

It prayed that all scientists, researchers and medical experts might find a remedy for the pandemic and also prayed for those working in the hospitals and health sectors, paramedics, the security services, the leaders and all who were at the frontline of the pandemic to be well protected in the discharge of their duties.
