‘Don’t decriminalise homosexuality’

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has urged Parliament to reject pressure from local and international organisations to decriminalise homosexuality in the country.

He said per the 1992 Constitution, homosexuality was not only unlawful but also unedifying.

"I humbly call on all Members of Parliament to remain resolute in defence of our Constitution and resist strongly any pressure that may arise for potential compromise. Let us stand steadfast and uphold godly legislation," he said at a press conference in Accra last Wednesday.

Rev. Fordjour said he corroborated the position of the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, to the effect that Ghana shall vehemently resist any pressure from groups who may seek review of the country's cherished laws in a way detrimental to and incongruent with the country's rich and reputed moral and cultural values.

"I wish to assure any group of people or institutions, both external and internal, who may court the interest of leading or financing the agenda of legitimising homosexuality and bestiality in Ghana that their exercise will utterly fail," he said.

Values and morals

The legislator said it was important for Ghanaians to safeguard the values and morals that fundamentally defined and determined their existence.

"That some jurisdictions recognise a certain way of life as acceptable standard, however, obscene and immoral they might be, does not make it acceptable in another jurisdiction. Globalisation is purposed to augment the strengths and values of nation states; certainly not meant to compromise the cultural and moral values therein," he said.

Rev. Fordjour said the principles of God as enshrined in the Holy Bible, upon which the spirit of the Constitution of most nation states were originally founded, unequivocally opposes homosexuality. He, therefore, opposed the views of the members of  the “Ghana Pavillion” who sought to canvas support from certain powerful persons.

He said it was alleged that a group of eight men had embarked on soliciting signatures to mount pressure on Ghana to decriminalise homosexuality.
