The Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, is receiving consular services since his detention in Amsterdam on May 10, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.
Ohene Frimpong has been in detention by the Dutch immigration authorities pursuant to a United States extradition order.
Mr Ablakwa announced this at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra last Monday.
“As you are all aware, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, was detained on May 10, 2026, at the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam by Dutch immigration authorities under a United States extradition order,” he stated.
Consular intervention
Mr Ablakwa said following the detention, Ghana’s Mission in The Hague has taken up the matter and is offering consular assistance to the legislator.
He said the Mission is coordinating with the Member of Parliament’s family and his legal representatives, as well as with the relevant Dutch authorities, to ensure that he is treated in accordance with internationally recognised standards and that his rights are not violated.
The minister confirmed that he personally visited the lawmaker in The Hague on May 24 this year.
“I can confirm that on May 24, 2026, I personally paid the Member of Parliament a consular visit in The Hague.
I also note that he was doing quite well when I engaged him and I had the opportunity of interacting with his lawyer during the visit,” Mr Ablakwa said.
Due process
The minister further stated that during the visit of the Dutch Minister for Justice and Security, David Van Weel, to Ghana on July 21, 2026, the Dutch government reaffirmed its commitment to due process in the case.
“During the visit of the Dutch Minister for Justice and Security, David Van Weel, on July 21, 2026, he stated that the Dutch government commits to due process and will ensure that his rights are respected,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
He assured that the government would continue to monitor developments and work with Dutch authorities to ensure the MP receives fair treatment under Dutch and international law.
