An aspiring Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, has intensified his campaign by crisscrossing the constituencies in the region.
Aside from embarking on constituency tours, Mr Appiah, popularly known as COKA, is also engaging delegates and using radio platforms to outline his vision.
The NPP regional office in Kumasi has also become a focal point of campaign activities, with posters of aspirants dominating its surroundings, reflecting the heightened interest in the elections.
Mr Appiah is being challenged by a former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, for the chairmanship slot.
Ejisu
Addressing party delegates during the fourth day of his campaign tour in the Ejisu Constituency, Mr Appiah explained that his decision to contest the party’s regional chairmanship was driven by his determination to help the NPP Flag bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, win the presidency in 2028.
Aside from that, he said he was seeking to rebuild strong party structures in the region to secure victory in the next general election.
“My mission is to ensure that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes President in 2029,” he told the delegates.
Mr Appiah said if elected Ashanti Regional Chairman, he would focus on strengthening the party at the grassroots, improving unity and mobilising members to deliver a decisive electoral victory for the NPP.
He, therefore, urged the delegates to vote for him in the regional executive elections scheduled for August 15, 2026, reminding them that he is number one on the ballot paper.
The Ashanti Region is regarded as the NPP's electoral stronghold and is expected to play a pivotal role in the party’s efforts to reclaim power in the 2028 general election, with the successful presidential candidate assuming office in January 2029.
The chairmanship contest has emerged as the centre of attention because of the strategic importance of the Ashanti Region to the party's electoral fortunes and organisational strength.
Considered a grassroots person, having served in various positions in the region, including the constituency chairman of Afigya Kwabre South, Mr Appiah believes he has a solid grassroots network built over years of active party mobilisation.
His showing in the 2022 regional elections, where he secured 306 votes against incumbent Bernard Antwi Boasiako's 464, has strengthened the perception that he commands considerable support among delegates and remains a formidable contender.
