GNPC loan saga: We will appeal court ruling — Atta Akyea

The Abuakwa North Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Samuel Atta Kyea, says the decision by an Accra High Court to quash the suit against the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) will be appealed.

The commercial division of the Accra Fast Track High court dismissed an injunction application brought before it by three MPs seeking to stop the GNPC from securing a $700 million loan.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei and Samuel Atta Akyea prayed the court to direct the GNPC to suspend any transactions relating to the procurement of the loan, at least, until hearing of the substantive case is concluded.

The plea was, however, not taken by the Presiding Judge, Justice Mrs A. Bartels-Kodwo.

This decision, the Abuakwa North MP said, did not mark the end to their case, stressing that the legislators would take steps to challenge the court ruling.

“We believe that the grounds upon which our case was thrown out was not that strong, hence we are meeting our lawyers to take measures to challenge the decision in an appropriate forum…,” he told Adom News’ s  Obiri Yeboah in an interview.

He continued that they were meeting with their lawyers to take the next steps since they were of the belief that the court, by the ruling, was ‘setting a bad precedence’ and giving too much powers to the GNPC.

“By that decision, the judge is implying that the GNPC is a god unto itself and is not obliged to bring its budget to Parliament and this is on the contrary…even Ghana government brings its budget to Parliament…,” he added.

He continued that it would be unfair for the court to make GNPC more powerful than Parliament.

However, his colleague, the Manhyia North MP, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, said he was not perturbed about the court ruling, insisting that posterity would never forgive the judge.
