Police promise protection during voter registration

The Mankranso District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr John Adusei, has given the assurance that there will be “maximum police protection” in the ongoing Limited Voter Registration.

On April 28 this year, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) started a limited voter registration exercise to reach out to Ghanaians who have attained the voting age of 18 and those who could not register during the last registration.

This will allow them to exercise their franchise as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

It is on record that during voter registration exercises in the country, some elements do the unexpected such as attempts to tamper with registration materials

It is against this backdrop that the police commander assured the people in the Ahafo-Ano-South District of protection during the nationwide exercise.

Speaking at the District Police West Africa Security Services Association get-together (WASSA) held at Mankranso last Friday, DSP Adusei said it was pertinent for the police to protect electoral officers and polling station agents of the various political parties participating in the November election.

He also said the police would need to protect electoral materials and ballot boxes at every polling stations.

Neutral role of police

He advised the police in the district to play neutral roles during the limited registration and the upcoming elections.

He said there was the need for the police to ensure peace at polling centres.

Flash points

DSP Adusei listed some flash-points for elections in the district as Mpasaaso Number Two, Domeabra, Kofofrom, Donya Nkwanta, Kunsu Number One, Boatengkrom, Mankranso, Biemso Number One, Adugyama South-West, Adugyama North, Sabronom, Pokukrom and Nsuta and  said the police had taken notice of those areas and would not renege on their duty to ensure peace.

He educated the public that the EC would provide challenge forms for people who would doubt the eligibility of those registering, saying that there would also be in place an Election Review Committee where anybody could channel concerns on the election and registration matters and that there was no need to create chaos.

The Kunsuhene, Nana Agyeman Badu Duah, was supported by Adugyamahene, Nana Boakye Yiadom Kotko and Wiawsohene, Nana Saow Ababio to chair the WASSA.

Other prominent people at the function included the District Chief Executive for Ahafo-Ano-South, Mr Gabriel Barimah; Member of Parliament for Ahafo-Ano South-West, Mr Johnson Kwaku Adu; the Tepa Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Mr Cosmos Damoah, representatives of the EC among other dignitaries.
