Weija-Gbawe MP demands urgent action over prolonged power outages

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called for immediate intervention to address the persistent power outages that have severely affected lives and disrupted businesses in his constituency for several months.

“While it is clear that the current power crisis is a national issue, Weija-Gbawe appears to have been disproportionately affected, with some communities experiencing continuous outages for more than four days and in certain instances, even longer," he stated.

In a statement issued on April 17, 2025, the MP highlighted the far-reaching impact of unannounced electricity cuts on essential sectors, including healthcare, education, and economic activities.

Mr Shaib criticised the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) for failing to provide prior notice before implementing power cuts, leaving residents distressed and unprepared.

“Despite several engagements with ECG officials aimed at resolving this crisis, there has been no meaningful progress. While we have received assurances of GRIDCo’s intervention, residents of Weija-Gbawe continue to endure the burden of unreliable electricity supply,” he added.

The MP urged ECG, GRIDCo, and the Ministry of Energy to take decisive steps to rectify the ongoing challenges.

He emphasised that the people of Weija-Gbawe deserve consistent and reliable power, and should no longer bear the brunt of inadequate service delivery.
