Kotoko goes for the double as Medeama eyes revenge
Tarkwa-based Medeama Sporting Club could be third time lucky to pick a trophy on Sunday, depending on how they match up against just-crowned league champions Asante Kotoko in their MTN FA Cup final at the Accra Stadium.
The two combatants cannot wait for the much-anticipated final, once-postponed due to a FIFA World Cup qualifier involving the Black Stars and Lesotho in Maseru.
The reason is simple: Kotoko are in a hurry to complete a dream double for the first time in their history, while Medeama have a duty to present their two sponsors — Gold Fields Ghana Limited and Ghana Manganese Company — with a major silverware as a way of justifying their huge investment in the club this season.
Another attraction for the big game has to do with the growing rivalry between the two clubs which reached dizzy heights a few weeks ago when they battled to a goalless draw in a league clash, resulting in a two-match home ban of Kotoko following crowd violence.
Above all, will be the motivation by Medeama to pay Kotoko back in their own coin for denying them the league title at the eleventh hour, having led the pack all the way till the last three games.
On another hand, those who are viewing the final through their technical lenses regard it as a battle of brains between two students of the game - Kotoko’s Mas-Ud Didi Dramani and Evans Adotey.
Whichever way it goes, however, history will be made on Sunday as a new MTN FA Cup champion will be crowned in the Season Three competition after Nania FC and New Edubiase had won the two previous editions respectively.
On top of a CAF Confederation Cup booking, the winner will also be entitled to the giant MTN trophy and GH¢30,000 cash prize, while the losing finalists console themselves with GH¢15,000.
