Tennis has bright future – Enoch Amartey

The immediate past president of the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA), Enoch Amartey, has noted that with the right financial support, focus, infrastructure,   strategies, and motivation, tennis will become one of the biggest sports in Ghana.

Commending tennis duo, Na-Adjrago Wisdom and George Darko for winning gold at the just-ended All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo, he said it was time to support players and the technical men in diverse ways.

Speaking to Graphic Sports last Monday after hosting the gold medalists, Wisdom Na-Adjrago and George Darko, together with Ghana’s tennis contingent who participated in the All Africa Games, he said with the right support, the sky would be the limit for Ghana in terms of tennis.

GFA vice-president Fred Crentsil and vice-chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Kudjoe Fianoo emerged high profile casualties of the GFA National Executive Committee elections after losing their seats in a shock outcome at yesterday’s polls in Accra.

The highly-influential duo missed out in their bid to retain their seats on the Executive Committee as the delegates favoured new faces, with experienced administrators such as Kofi Manu (Blue Blue) and Jones Alhassan Abu also given the boot.

Former FIFA vice-president banned from football activities for life

Former FIFA official Jack Warner has been banned from football for life by world soccer's governing body.

The former FIFA vice-president quit football four years ago amid a string of corruption allegations and is facing fraud charges as part of a United States investigation.

FIFA's Ethics Committee handed down the ban to Warner, who served as president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) between 1990 and 2011.

Opoku wins Ghana’s Fastest Human

Shadrack Opoku of Ashanti Region at the weekend emerged champion at this year’s Ghana Fastest Human held at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

He overpowered the competition’s big guns such as Appiah Kubi of Ashanti Region and Desmond Aryee of the Greater Accra Region.

Ghana’s Fastest Human (GFH) is an intitative aimed at unearthing sprint talents for the national team and is powered by Surfline and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

Polo: Ghana wins Nkrumah-Nehru Cup

Ghana beat India 5 to 21/2 in their first-ever polo encounter staged at the Accra Polo Club last Saturday in the presence of Ms Samia Nkrumah, Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and K. Jeeva Sagar, Indian High Commissioner to Ghana.

The match, dubbed Nkrumah-Nehru Polo Cup in memory of the two great political leaders of Ghana and India, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Jawaharlal Nehru, respectively was also witnessed by the sector Minister, Dr Mustapha Ahmed.

Accra Polo Club paraded Dan Guy, Dishan Ibrahim, Damian Duncan and captain Jamil Ibrahim, while the Indians featured Naveen Singh Tanwar, Raghav Rao, Ram Singh and Major Arjun Patil.

How did our referees fare?

The 2014/2015 Premier League season has ended, leaving in its trail the usual wranglings, accusations and arguments. And luckily, perhaps, for the first time in several years, there is no dispute about the three teams to be relegated.

This is not to say that all the relegation-bound teams have accepted their fate without any qualms. There are accusations of some teams ganging up against one or two of the relegated ones. Perhaps, as an association, the GFA has to take note.

Gold-winning Black Queens players are fuming with rage, swearing fire and brimstone, never to vacate the M-Plaza Hotel in Accra until their $11,000 each in oustanding bonuses had been paid.

The Queens have flatly turned down government’s $2,000 bonus offer for winning gold at the All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo since they moved in last Sunday, insisting that they be paid $23,00 each, including their outstanding bonuses.

Special Olympics athletes assured of cash prizes

Special Olympics Ghana has presented certificates of honour to the four athletes who won four silver medals for Ghana during the Special Olympics World Games held in Los Angeles between July 23 and August 3, this year.

The acting board chairman of Special Olympics Ghana, Nana Wereko-Ampim Opoku, who presented the certificates during the Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s Day celebration in Accra, assured of honouring them with cash prizes to motivate them to nurture their potentials in sports and become world class athletes.

Gberbie wins Diplomatic Corps golf

Teye Lartey Gberbie last Saturday won the flagship men’s Group A category of the Dean of Diplomatic Corps invitational golf tournament held at the Celebrity Golf Club in Accra.

Returning a score of 38 points, 42-year-old Gberbie pipped Majid Joeher - who amassed 36 points, in second and Joe Ampofo who tied Joeher's score but lost out on countback.

For his outstanding display Gberbie was presented with a crystal trophy as well as a Business Class South African Airways return ticket to Johannesburg.

A kumasi-based businessman, Ernest Antwi (Opaana), gave tennis fans something to smile about when he delivered a number of aces to dismiss Dr Cudjoe Diaba to win the maiden Donyma Tennis competition in Kumasi.

Opaana, as the winner is affectionately called, proved that his recent stellar performances were no fluke as he literally pummelled the medical doctor from start to finish.

The men’s final, which was supposed to have been played last Saturday, was rained off and rescheduled.

At the time the rains interrupted the exciting match, Opaana was leading 3-1 and everything pointed to an annihilation of his opponent.
