Ashgold sweep PLB Awards
Ashantigold midfielder, Eric Opoku, was the unsung hero at the 2014/15 PLB Awards after being crowned the Footballer of the Season to complete the Miners’ haul at the impressive ceremony at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel last Friday.

The combative Opoku defied stiff competition from the Goalkeeper of the Season, Richard Ofori of Wa All Stars, and Goal King Kofi Owusu of Berekum Chelsea fame, to grab the enviable prize and a $1,000 top-up from the chairman of the occasion, Mr Ernest Thompson.
It was an emotional spectacle to behold when the overwhelmed Opoku mounted the stage to be decorated by the Guest of Honour, Osagyefo Oseadeayo Agyeman-Badu II, Mr Thompson, PLB chairman Welbeck Abra-Appiah and GFA Executive Committee member, George Afriyie.
Prior to the event, Richard Ofori was tipped to run away with both the best goalkeeper and best player awards, following stints with the Black Stars, Black Meteors and the local Black Stars, but the scales titled in favour of Opoku for his contribution to Ashantigold’s success story this season.
Ashantigold’s haul began with the crowning of Kudjoe Fianoo as the CEO of the Season, followed by Coach Bashir Hayford’s emergence as the best coach, while capping it all up with the Best Behaved Supporting Group. The Miners also went home with a GH¢50,000 cheque as their prize for winning the league title for the first time in 19 years.
Other awardees on the night included Inter Allies' Baba Mensah, named as Defender of the Year, while Wa All Stars goalie Richard Ofori, got the Goalkeeper of the Season.
Inter Allies’ stalwart Baba Mensah beat his Meteors and home-based teamate, Lawrence Lartey, to the Defender of the Season award, New Edubiase’s Latif Anabila picked the Most Promising Player award at the expense of Latif Blessing of Liberty Professionals and WAFA’s skilful Gideon Waja.
Interestingly, FIFA Referee Seidu Bomison happened to be the other beneficiary of Mr Thompson’s additional $1,000 offer after winning the Referee of the Season honours, with FIFA Referee Dawoud Ouedrago picking the Assistant Referee of the Season award.
