Best of Bukom: Segbedzi, Commey shine on unforgettable night at Bukom Arena

It was a night of thunderous punches, roaring fans and triumphant champions as Sampson Segbedzi and Joseph “Jaguar” Commey stormed to emphatic national title victories on a thrilling Saturday night at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Segbedzi, 26, preserved his perfect record with a masterclass performance, outclassing Habib Kehinde Giwa to retain his national title in the headline bout of the Best of Bukom fight festival, staged by the Bishop Boxing Promotions.

The spectacle, blending Ghanaian flair with a taste of American showmanship, proved as dazzling outside the ropes as it was inside them.

From the opening bell, Segbedzi made his intentions clear. A blistering right hook in the dying seconds of round one nearly toppled Giwa, setting the tone for a dominant display that showcased the benefits of his recent one-month training tour in Canada. Round after round, the Ashaiman-based fighter dictated the pace, rattling his opponent with sharp combinations and slick movement.

The judges’ scorecards told the story—100-90, 98-92 and a curious 96-95—all in favour of Segbedzi, who extended his record to 10-0. With Ashaiman MP Ernest Norgbey again ringside to cheer him on, the champion’s stock continues to rise.

Commey’s classy show

If Segbedzi’s win was commanding, Commey’s was devastating. The 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist and 2023 African Games gold medallist needed just two rounds to dismantle seasoned veteran Victor Kuwornu, who after a barrage of punishment, refused to come out for the third round.

At only 22 and with just three professional fights under his belt, Commey now adds the national lightweight crown to his UBO Africa title—an astonishing haul for a boxer still in the dawn of his career.

Thrillers

The action-packed undercard was no less gripping. Rising world-title hopeful Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey, known as “Theo Lopez,” dazzled with his slick footwork and relentless pace, bamboozling Beninois opponent Martin Kouassi Klaklevi for four one-sided rounds before forcing a stoppage.

The crowd roared with approval as Allotey showcased the poise of a man destined for bigger stages.

Elsewhere, Stephen “Dominant” Coffie lived up to his nickname, outworking rival Dwamena Kesse en route to a majority decision victory (78-74, 80-73, 76-76). Isaac Commey blew away Issah Awal with two knockdowns and a first-round stoppage, while Vandorf Okrah forced Isaac Aryeetey to quit after six gruelling rounds.

Haruna “Thunder” Mohammed bounced back from a recent loss with a thunderous second-round knockout of Stephen Abbey in their cruiserweight clash, while Michael Abban overpowered veteran Gabriel Odoi Laryea in four.
