Black Stars World Cup Fund: Ghana Gas, others redeem pledges

Ghana Gas Limited on Thursday redeemed a pledge of five million Ghana Cedis (Gh¢5,000,000) to the Black Stars World Cup Fund as part of their support to the national team’s impending participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In addition, contributions were also received from Ecobank Ghana Limited (Gh¢3,000), Zijin Golden Ridge Limited (Gh¢1,130,000) and Absa Bank (Gh¢1,000,000), all showing their commitment to the success of the Black Stars on the global stage.

Officials of OmniBsic Bank whose Gh¢250,000 contribution was announced last week, were also on hand to make a symbolic presentation to Deputy Finance Minister and Chairman of the Black Stars World Cup Fundraising Committee, Thomas Nyarko Ampem at the Ministry of Finance in Accra.

The donations forms part of a growing wave of financial backing aimed at strengthening Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following the official launch of the fundraising initiative by President John Dramani Mahama in March, targeting $30 million from corporate Ghana and the general public.

Previous donors include Engineers & Planners, KGL, Stanbic Bank and others as the countdown to the global soccer showpiece in North America edges ever closer.

The Black Stars make a 5th appearance on the global stage in the historic 48-team tournament scheduled for USA/Mexico / Canada June 11-July 19. Ghana is in Group L where the national team plays Panama, England and Croatia.

“We know football is our national sport and the Black Stars occupy the heartbeat of the nation, so we just offering our widow’s mite in support of our boys.

We hope that this will go far to ensure success for all of Ghana,” said Rene Nelson, Deputy CEO of Ghana.

Receiving the donations, Deputy Minister Ampem expressed appreciation to the donors for showing commitment and love for the Black Stars.

He appealed to others who have pledged to redeem their pledges and reminded others that the door is still open for more contributions before the end of this month.
