The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Ghana have declared Team Ghana’s Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign an ‘outstanding’ success despite the nation returning home with just two medals.
It insisted that the performances provide a solid foundation for greater achievements at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
In a statement issued at the close of the Games in Glasgow yesterday, the GOC/CGA said the team’s achievements should not be measured solely by the medal table but by the quality of performances, fighting spirit and resilience displayed against some of the Commonwealth’s strongest sporting nations.
Ghana finished the Games with two medals—a historic silver won by Zinabu Issah in the Women’s F57 Shot Put and a bronze claimed by Amadu Mohammed in the men’s 55kg boxing competition.
The Committee noted that the country’s athletes consistently demonstrated determination, discipline and courage while competing against world-class opposition.
The GOC/CGA also highlighted the impressive performances of the men’s 4×100 metres relay team of Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Bokpin, Saminu Rashid-Abdul and Benjamin Azamati, whose display of speed and teamwork earned widespread admiration despite narrowly missing the podium.
Commendation
Beyond the medal winners, the Committee commended Team Ghana's total of 40 athletes across athletics, para athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming, para swimming, para powerlifting and weightlifting for representing the nation with distinction throughout the Games.
“The experience gained in Glasgow will serve as a strong foundation for even greater achievements. Our focus now shifts to preparing Team Ghana, together with our emerging talents, for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through improved preparation, targeted athlete development and stronger support systems,” the statement said.
The GOC/CGA further expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, corporate partners including GCB Bank PLC, the EEZZY Group Foundation, the Ghana Sports Fund, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, team management, the media, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and the Ghanaian community in Scotland for their support.
The GOC also congratulated every athlete and official, stressing that the true success of Glasgow 2026 extended beyond medals and reflected the unity, resilience and fighting spirit that continue to define Ghanaian sport.
