Kokoto overtake Hearts as Wa All Stars back to the top

Striker Duada Mohammed yesterday scored a hat-trick to give Kumasi Asante Kotoko a comfortable 4-2 victory over Techiman City at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The victory lifted Kotoko to the third position on the league log behind Wa All Stars and Aduana Stars but ahead of fourth-placed Accra Hearts on head-to-head count.

Mohammed opened the floodgates in the 20th minute after converting a spot kick after a former Kotoko player, Stephen Manu, handled the ball in the penalty box. The Kotoko hitman added another goal three minutes later after capitalising on a defensive blunder by the homesters.

Three minutes into the second half, Mohammed popped up again to deliver a cheeky chip into the far right corner of the net for his third goal in the game.

It was a torrid moment for the visitors whose head coach, Yusif Abubakari, had abandoned the club after he was chased away by irate fans of the club following their 1-1 draw with AshantiGold last Wednesday.

Assistant coach, Nana Joe Adarkwa, appeared not ready to step into the shoes of his boss, as his players chased Kotoko’s shadows for most parts of the game yesterday.

Techiman City pulled one in the 63rd minute through Okyere Sarpong’s header, but Kotoko responded  immediately through Edwin Tuffour Frimpong a minute later to restore their three-goal lead.

Ebenezer Agypong further reduced the tally for the visiting side in the 71st minute.

• At the Nana Agyemang Badu Park at Dormaa-Ahenkro, Aduana consigned regional neighbours Bechem United to the relegation zone with a 4-ß2 thrashing, with attacking midfielder Yahaya Mohammed scoring twice to end the first round as the league’s leading scorer with 11 goals. He shared the spotlight yesterday with teammate Bright Adjei who also netted a brace for Aduana.

• Wa All Stars return to the top of the league log after stunning Berekum Chelsea 1-0 at the Golden City Park through an 80th minute goal by in-form forward Richard Arthur.

• Confederation Cup campaigners Medeama SC continued their fine form with a 2-0 Victory over New Edubiase United at Tarkwa, while  Paul Acquah salvaged a point for Hearts who held sixth-placed Dreams FC 1-1 at Dawu.

Acquah scored an 84th minute equalising goal to cancel out Lawson Bekui’s opening goal in the 30th minute.
