Kotoko fans hold referee hostage

Irate Asante Kotoko fans last Wednesday vented their spleen on Class One referee, E. R. Biney, and held him hostage for close to two hours following the team’s 0-1 loss to bogey side Kpando Heart of Lions in the First Capital plus Premier League at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The referee’s crime was failing to award the Porcupine Warriors a last-minute penalty even though the incident had happened just outside the penalty area.

Indeed, the referee who was a last-minute substitute to FIFA Referee J. O. Lamptey, had been inconsistent with Kotoko bearing the brunt of his ineptitude.

But the fans went to the extreme when they laid ambush in wait for the poor referee as police re-enforcement team forced them out of the stadium.

Even that, they still waited outside the main entrance to the stadium in wait for the referee but they were outwitted by the smart police officers, who whisked him out of the stadium in one of their vans.

A police source told the Graphic Sports yesterday that the referee was escorted to his hotel and relocated until he left town the following morning.
