Kwakye, Azamati, others win Sports Excellence awards

Jeanette Kwakye, a Ghanaian-British journalist with the BBC, prolific golfer Vincent Torgah, student athlete Benjamin Kwaku Azamati and others dazzled at the Fourth Annual Ghana Sports Excellence Awards held at the British Council Hall in Accra recently.

Jeanette emerged as the Exceptional Diasporan Journalist at the awards, with Torgah and Azamati winning the Unsung Hero and Exceptional Student Athlete prizes respectively.

Jeanette, a retired athlete who competed for the United Kingdom, has covered major sporting events around the globe.

Also, Torgah is currently a great force in the West African golf fraternity.

In 2019, he won the Masters on the African Tour for the third consecutive time, bringing his total win for the year to six and in the top two among 10 tournaments in the 2019 season.

Other winners

Last year, Azamati swept all the medals in the 100 metres race and 4x100m heat in the Inter-Hall Athletics towards the West African University Games (WAUG) held in Port Harcourt in Nigeria and the mini Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.

Other award winners included Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah, who was named the Rising Star, Yaw Ofosu Larbi of TV3 Network as an Exceptional TV journalist, Naa Anang, Diasporan Rising Star and Christabel Nettey, Exceptional Diasporan Athlete.

Total Ghana and Nestle Ghana were also recognised for their Exceptional Contribution to sports development and promotion in the country.
