Match in memory of the late Eric Amankwah­

A special football match in memory of a former player of the Black Stars, the late Eric Amankwah, will be played at the Akosombo Presbyterian School Park on Sunday.

The match which involves two local clubs, Muzuu Football Academy based at Anchiase in the Asuogyaman District, and Akosombo Select Side will be preceded with the burial ceremony and final funeral rites of Eric Amankwah at Akosombo.

 

Briefing the Graphic Sports at Akosombo, the chairman of the funeral organiing committee, Mr. Daniel B. Nte said, the memorial match of Eric Amankwah had become necessary in view of his immense contribution to the Black Stars and his former club, Akotex FC.

He said the match at the Presbyterian school park would rekindle memories of the day Akotex met Kumasi Asante Kotoko in which the deceased and former Akotex players like Thomas Kankam, Yaw Mark, Lomo Mitchel and goalkeeper Mapio, all deceased, featured at Akosombo.

According to Mr. Nte, A former Akotex top striker, Gideon Asante, now football coach, will handle the local Akosombo side that will meet Muzuu Football Academy.

Coach J.E Adabie, a long-time coach of Akotex who handled the team to beat Kotoko 3-0 in a league match in Kumasi, and also a former coach of the Black Stars, as well as past footballers of Akotex and supporters will be expected at the memorial match and funeral ceremony.

Also expected to attend are officials of Akosombo Textiles Limited, the Ghana Football Association and the DCE of Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, among others. 

The late Amankwah, aka, Soccer James Brown,  featured prominently for the Black Stars and Akotex in the 70s.
