No excessive cash for C’wealth Games — Minister

As a fallout  from the country’s experience with the Black Stars during the World Cup, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr Mahama Ayariga, has directed all officials travelling to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow not to carry cash more than what has been approved by the Bank of Ghana or the host nation.

He said he had requested Mr Victor Smith, Ghana’s High Commissioner to UK, to allow for the transfer of money that will sustain the team while in Glasgow, and promised never to allow the country to be embarrassed again.

Mr Ayariga also said he would  ensure resources for the development of sports “are used judiciously for the benefit of all”, promising that the team to the Commonwealth Games will be given the needed support to hold the flag of Ghana high in Glasgow.

During the Black Stars campaign in Brazil, $3million cash was airlifted to the team after their agitation for the cash payment of their appearance fees.

The action, embarrassingly, attracted the attention of the international media as the cash on arrival in Brazil was given security guards from the airport to the team’s hotel.
