Sapholda Hockey League: Exchequers, Royal Ladies crowned champions
The 2025 Sapholda Greater Accra Hockey League reached a dramatic climax at the Theodosia Okoh Stadium last Saturday, with Exchequers of the Bank of Ghana and the Royal Ladies of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) crowned champions in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively.
Exchequers clinched the men’s title by the narrowest of margins, edging rivals GRA on goal difference after a nerve-shredding final day.
The defending champions were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Reformers of Prisons -– the first time all season they had failed to score -– leaving their fate hanging in the balance.
GRA, the only team still in contention, capitalised with a commanding 3-0 victory over bottom side Legon Knights to draw level on 27 points.
However, Exchequers’ superior goal difference (+31 compared to GRA’s +14), thanks in part to their crushing 10-0 aggregate wins in both league meetings with the taxmen, proved decisive in the title race.
The runners-up spot offered some consolation for GRA, who secured qualification alongside Exchequers for next year’s Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC). The Revenue men can also take heart from their earlier triumph at the T-Tommy Memorial Tournament in Kumasi.
In the women’s division, however, there was no such suspense. The all-conquering Royal Ladies stormed to the title in emphatic fashion, winning all 10 of their matches to finish with a perfect record.
Their dominance ensures GRA will represent Ghana in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the ACCC in Egypt next February.
The Head of Sports at the GRA, Ebenezer Frimpong, praised the achievement of both teams and paid tribute to the Commissioner General, management and staff of the authority for their “unflinching support.”
“The Royal Ladies are well on course to meeting our target of winning all five competitions this year,” he revealed. “We have already lifted the ACCC, the T-Tommy, the Oguaa Fetu Afahye Cup and now the Sapholda GAHA League. The knockout cup in November is the last one remaining.”
