Takyi relocates to London, eyes world stage
Ghanaian boxing sensation Samuel "Ring Warrior" Takyi has swapped Accra for London in a bold move aimed at turbocharging his journey towards a world title — and he has already thrown down the gauntlet to one of America’s hottest prospects, Floyd Schofield.
The 24-year-old Olympic bronze medallist has joined the IQ Boxing Gym under the guidance of UK-based Ghanaian promoter and manager, Michael Amoo-Bediako.
Brimming with confidence and renewed focus, Takyi says he is ready to make waves in the UK scene as he builds his way up the global rankings.
"I’ll be based here for a while to continue my career. Very soon, I’ll have a fight date. I’m here to improve, keep fighting, break into the world rankings — and then we go for the world titles," Takyi told the Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview from his London base.
True to his outspoken style, Takyi once again reiterated his mission to emulate Ghanaian boxing legends such as Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey.
"As I’ve always said, I’m promising Ghanaians that very soon they’ll see the Azumah Nelsons and Ike Quarteys in me. It’s a dream I’m fixated on making a reality, so the hard work continues," he declared.
Takyi made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by clinching bronze — Africa’s sole boxing medal at the Games and Ghana’s first Olympic medal in 29 years.
He turned professional in 2022 under the mentorship of former world champion Ike “Bazooka” Quartey and was initially managed by Clement Quartey, son of the Ghanaian legend.
Since turning pro, the Accra-born fighter has compiled a perfect record: seven wins, all by knockout.
Now, with his eyes set firmly on the big stage, Takyi has issued a fiery challenge to 21-year-old American star Floyd Schofield — fresh off a stunning 78-second demolition of former world champion Tevin Farmer last week in California.
Schofield boasts an unblemished record of 19 wins with 13 KOs since making his debut in October 2020. But Takyi sees more than just a rising star — he sees a shot at legacy.
With fire in his belly at his London training base, the talented Ghanaian is chasing titles, history and Ghanaian boxing greatness.
“I’m challenging you, Floyd Schofield, to knock you out. I’m coming to take revenge for Ike Quartey,” Takyi said boldly. “Your promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, beat Ike Quartey in a controversial decision back in 1999. I want to avenge our legend, so watch out!”
