The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has withdrawn the death threat complaint he filed against former Ghanaian boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers.
Following this development, Powers has been discharged by the Dansoman Circuit Court after spending one week on remand in police custody.
Powers was arrested by the police on Monday, August 24, 2026, following the complaint as a result of the circulation of a video on social media video in which he was alleged to have threatened Yaw Ampofo Ankrah with death.
He was subsequently put before the Dansoman Circuit Court on August 25 and remanded for one week in police custody to reappear on September 2, 2026.
The former boxer pleaded not guilty to the charge of threat of death.
Following a withdrawal notice as contained in a letter from Ankrah, which was filed by the prosecution in court on Wednesday, September 2, Ayitey Powers was discharged by the court.
The NSA boss has also directed Powers to direct any grievances to the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) over his claim for compensation for a $100,000 loss due to a government-enforced cancellation of a boxing event in September 2025.
The development comes after the GBIMC had called for Powers’ arrest and prosecution following the alleged threat.
The GBIMC described the conduct as unacceptable and criminal, while insisting that Ghana boxing should not be held hostage by intimidation, thuggery or impunity. The committee also announced disciplinary proceedings against Powers.
Following his release, Powers was captured in a video singing praise songs in the company of friends and family.
In the video, the former boxer, who is also a part-time musician, sang:
“Great God of wonders, you are the only God I know. There is nothing in this world my God cannot do.”
