Ghana Statistical Service to commence first Accommodation Survey on November 1
Ghana is set to gather its first in-depth data on the accommodation sector with the launch of a nationwide survey by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
Starting November 1, 2024, this initiative marks a crucial turning point for the hospitality industry, as it will provide the first comprehensive dataset on the performance and dynamics of commercial accommodation units across the country.

What makes this survey particularly significant is its potential impact on policy-making and investment decisions.
With the country’s tourism sector projected to be the third-largest foreign exchange earner by 2027, accounting for 30 percent of tourist expenditure in accommodation alone, accurate data on the sector’s performance is essential.
For years, the lack of detailed statistics has limited the ability of stakeholders—both in government and the private sector—to make informed decisions.
Dr. Ebenezer Kojo Ocran, the survey coordinator, noted that the findings will provide valuable insights into key areas such as revenue trends, occupancy rates, pricing, and guest demographics.
He said this information will help the government tailor interventions, such as tax reliefs and credit facilities, to better support the industry.
Beyond government policies, he added that the survey will also benefit businesses by helping them better understand market trends and operational dynamics. For investors, the data could highlight areas of untapped potential, helping them assess risks and opportunities more accurately.

The survey, which will be conducted across all 261 districts and 16 administrative regions, will involve 1,077 accommodation units—a sample from the total 9,602 registered units.
Using Computer-Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) software, the survey will gather data electronically, ensuring accuracy and speed in reporting.
The Acting Deputy Government Statistician, Edward Asuo Afram emphasized that the data will enhance revenue management in the hospitality industry, allowing businesses and policymakers to respond more effectively to market demands.
The survey will also serve as a valuable resource for academic research, providing a baseline for ongoing studies into the sector’s development.
