Ghana's rich cultural heritage can drive entrepreneurial success, says GEA Deputy CEO

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Kwabena Boakye Asante, says Ghana’s rich cultural heritage serves as a vital force in propelling entrepreneurial success throughout the nation.

To him, Ghana’s vibrant history, steeped in diverse traditions and values, fosters a unique environment where innovation and collaboration can thrive.

By harnessing the values, traditions, and creativity embedded in Ghana’s culture, business owners can carve out niches that celebrate their identity and resonate with consumers both locally and globally, he added.

“Ghana's rich cultural heritage is a source of pride and inspiration. It shapes our identity, values, and way of life,” he stated at a workshop in Accra recently.

The workshop, which was on the theme "Exploring the Impact of Ghanaian Culture on Startups: Avoiding Potential Pitfalls," brought together aspiring entrepreneurs and industry leaders to explore how to leverage cultural strengths while addressing inherent challenges in the entrepreneurial landscape. Its aim was to equip Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in Ghana's competitive business environment.

Mr. Asante highlighted the dual nature of Ghanaian culture, which offers significant advantages as well as potential pitfalls for businesses.

He pointed out community spirit, resilience, creativity, and hospitality as positive cultural traits that can propel entrepreneurial success.

However, he also noted that the stigma surrounding failure can create a fear of taking risks, leading to a conservative approach to entrepreneurship.

Recognising this, he stressed the importance of reframing failure as an opportunity for growth, encouraging entrepreneurs to adopt a mindset that embraces experimentation and learning.

He urged organisations to prioritise a merit-based culture that values all ideas, allowing younger team members to contribute freely.

“Creating safe spaces for dialogue will foster a more inclusive and innovative environment,” he noted.

Entrepreneurs present were also encouraged to explore creative ways to generate capital, including through barter trades and strategic partnerships.

In his address, Owusu-Boateng emphasised the need for entrepreneurs to be resourceful and innovative in securing capital.

"It’s crucial that you consider alternative methods such as barter trade and partnerships, especially when traditional financing is hard to come by," he told the audience.
