Mobile data penetration up 8.66% - between January and June this year

Mobile data subscribers in the country reached a whopping 18,755,928 as at the end of June this year from 15,805,646 in January.

This puts the country’s data penetration rate at 67.56 per cent, an increase of 8.66 per cent since January the same year.

Breakdown

MTN’s mobile datasubscribers forJune 2016were9,369,407. The company which also dominates in the mobile voice category presently holds amarketshare49.95 per cent.

The total number of data subscribers for Vodafone’s mobile data was 3,271,790 in the month under review. This represented a market share of 17.44 per cent, making it the second largest in terms of subscribers.

In the same period under review, Airtel’smobiledatasubscribersfor Junestood at 3,058,545. Their market share forthe month was 16.31 per cent.

tiGO’s data subscribersfor June2016 was 2,716,023 bringing its marketshare forthe monthunder review to 14.48 per cent.

Glo now commands a paltry 1.59 per cent data subscriber market share with just 298,622 of subscribers.

Expresso’s mobiledata subscriber figures as at the end of June2016was 41,541. Thisrepresentsa marketshare of0.22 per cent forthe monthunder review.

Fixed Telephony

The introduction of and use of mobile phones has worsened the growth of fixed telephony in the country. This area which was highly sort by telecom companies within the country and across the world has been dormant for many years. As at June this year, therestill remainonly twooperatorsproviding fixed lineservicesto the public.They areVodafoneMobile and AirtelGhana.

As at June 2016,the totalsubscriptionsfor the fixed operatorscame to256,653,representing a percentagedecreaseof 0.55 per centfrom thepreviousmonth for instance.

Vodafone Ghanarecordeda total subscriberbase of 248,536whilesAirtel ended June with8,117 subscribers.

Broadband WirelessAccess (BWA) Operators

As at the end of June 2016, the total number of subscribers for Broadband Wireless Access data was 109,160. Surfline’s subscriber base was 81,325. While Blu Ghana recorded a total subscriber figure of just 1,299. Broadband Home recorded a total of 26,536 subscribers.

Mobile voice

MTN’s voice subscriber figures for the period June stood at 17,579,045. This represents 0.86 percent from the May 2016’s figure of 17,428,380. The company has the largest market share of 48.01 per cent.

Vodafone’s mobile voice subscribers increased from 8,054,346 at the end of May 2016 to 8,093,710 as at the end of June 2016. This represents a percentage increase of 0.49 per cent while its market share for June 2016 was 22.11 per cent.

tiGO’s voice subscribers increased from 5,203,063 as at the end of May 2016 to 5,261,454 as at the end of June 2016. This represents a percentage increase of 1.12 per cent. The company’s market share for the month under review was 14.37 per cent.

Airtel’s voice subscribers decreased from 4,798,480 as at the end of May 2016 to 4,678,736 as at the end of June 2016.

This represents a percentage drop of 2.50 per cent. Its total market share for the month under review was 12.78 per cent.

Glo’s voice subscribers also fell from 944,260 as at the end of May 2016 to 897,082 at the end of June2016. This reflects a percentage decrease five per cent for the month with a total market share for the month under review as 2.45 per cent.
