Let’s support Blackstar Film Festival

With the establishment of the Blackstar International Film Festival (BSIFF), Ghana joins the ranks of countries providing valuable opportunities to connecting both filmmakers and audiences alike.

All over the world, film festivals have been the platforms where many filmmakers have launched very successful careers. Some movies screened at these events have gone on to win some highly coveted awards.

Our local film industry stands to benefit immensely from the wealth of talent that will be flying in from all across the world to attend the festival scheduled for August 25-29, 2016.

We at Showbiz would like to say kudos to Juliet Asante and her team for such a laudable initiative. We know how difficult it is to start such projects especially when there is very little government and corporate support at the initial stages.

This notwithstanding, we urge our local industry players, in particular, filmmakers, to get involved since it gives them the chance to commune with fellow filmmakers, supporters, media representatives and other various professionals who will participate in the festival.

The issue of financing and distribution of movies, which will be discussed by the panel, is particularly pertinent to our growing industry. Both established and upcoming filmmakers need to attend and learn from some of the most respected experts from across the world.

As we strive to break through the world market with our movies, such knowledge is essential to have and there is no better way than to do so in the comfort of your own country.

We as Ghanaians also need to do our part in showing support for the Blackstar International Film Festival by making sure we participate in the activities that have been lined up for the festival.

For those whose children have a passion for filmmaking, this event is of equal importance since it will hold special screenings and programmes for children, teaching them about a specific aspect of filmmaking, a particular social issue or art form.
