‘Three people a week receive blood donations because of my posts’ — Nana Tea
Popular social media influencer and philanthropist James Annor Tetteh, widely known as Nana Tea, has revealed that his online posts help secure life-saving blood donations for an average of three people every week.
“Sometimes I’m just walking in traffic and someone stops me and says, ‘Nana, you saved my life.’ I don’t even know them. It’s all because of a blood donation post I made. That’s how powerful social media can be,” he said.
He made these comments on Springboard, Your Virtual University, hosted by Rev. Albert Ocran, as part of the ongoing Changing Narratives series. Nana Tea shared how his consistent posts about urgent blood donation needs have built a loyal online community that responds swiftly—even when they don’t personally know the people in need.
He credited the trust and transparency he has built with his followers for the consistent support. “I always show the before and after. If someone donates, I show the receipt or handover photo so people know their kindness reached the right place.”
His work, he explained, began unintentionally after a photo of a young boy carrying firewood went viral. That single post drew donations for the child’s welfare and set the tone for what has now become a full-scale digital humanitarian platform. “That was the very first time I trended. I was just telling a story, but people responded. And that showed me how stories can move people to act.”
Over the years, Nana Tea has used his platform to support educational campaigns, medical emergencies, and everyday struggles faced by ordinary Ghanaians. He revealed that many of the people he helps remind him of his own past. “I almost missed senior high school because of money. A headmaster had sympathy on me. That single act changed my life. So when I see others in need, I know exactly how that feels.”
Looking ahead, he said he is working on creating a more structured system beyond his personal brand. With his inbox flooded with requests daily, he hopes to partner with NGOs, companies, and individuals who can help expand the support network. “It’s not just about Nana Tea anymore. I want to go beyond Ghana and reach Africa.”
He also described social media as a game changer. “People think social media is just for jokes. But lives are being saved. If people trust you, they’ll give. And that can make all the difference.”
