In a brief message to mark the day, Ambassador Garcés Carabalí stated that the Government of Change, led by His Excellency President Gustavo Petro; Vice-President, Francia Marquez Mina, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo, the Embassy of Colombia is at the service of Colombians living in Ghana and West Africa!

According to him, since the arrival at the Embassy of Colombia in Ghana, they have assumed with great responsibility and commitment the mission of strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana, West Africa and Colombia.

Bridge that unites

As an Ambassador, “our role is to be the bridge that unites two cultures, two economies and two peoples with global histories and aspirations, with the goal to build a strong and lasting relationship based on mutual respect, cooperation and understanding, working tirelessly to promote the interests of Colombia, while also seeking opportunities for beneficial cultural and economic exchange”.

He mentioned the official visit of the Vice-President, Francia Marquez Mina, to the Republic of Ghana and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Education, Bilingualism, Innovation, Science and Technology between Ghana and Colombia as a sign of growing friendship between the two countries.

UN Security Council advocacy

He said Ghana would work with Colombia on UN Security Council advocacy, and would also agree with Colombia on a mechanism for mutual support in nominations to the UN Human Rights Committee and other mechanisms while it advances political consultations to raise the level of the relationship between the two countries for a mutual benefit.

He announced that the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2024 will take place in Colombia from August 31 to September 22 followed by the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity will convene in Cali, Colombia, from October – November 2024.

For Colombia, as a megadiverse country, it is an honour to host the sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and its protocols, which will take place in the city of Cali from October 21 to November 1.

Great responsibility

Colombia has a great responsibility to host the highest decision-making body facing the great challenge of reversing and halting biodiversity loss and finding innovative financial mechanisms to achieve the 2030 targets, which we set out in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This will therefore be a COP that calls for action, with a vision of urgency and the future.

The country hopes to have representatives of the 196 States Parties, as well as a broad participation of civil society, social movements, the private sector, United Nations agencies, representatives of indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants and peasants, among others.
He wished all Columbians home and abroad Happy Independence Day!!
