Accompanied by the school band amidst singing and dancing, the pupils and students from the primary and junior high school departments, as well as their parents walked from the school’s premises through Tesano, Abeka, North Kaneshie, Fadama and then back to the school.

After the walk, the schoolchildren were screened to check their weight, dental hygiene, ear, nose and throat (E.N.T) and eyes.

Speaking to the Junior Graphic, Dr Maame Yaa Nyarkoa of the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital in Accra said some of the cases she detected were overweight among the children.

Parents, she said, should take keen interest in the kind of food their children eat to avoid obesity among them.

A  Physician Assistant at the Keta Municipal Hospital in the Volta Region, Ms Peace Egyi, who screened the ears, noses and throats of the  schoolchildren, said most cases that affected children were otitis media which mostly affected the ear drum and inflammation of the ear.

According to her, children like putting things such as erasers, pencils, lead and pieces of paper into their ears, which usually cause inflammation of the ear.

‘’These are common cases we detect anytime they are brought to the hospital. If care is not taken, it is going to affect their ear drum, thereby impairing their hearing. So parents must monitor their children well so that they do not put any particles into their ears,’’ she remarked.

Ms Egyi emphasised  that the ear plays a key role in every child’s development, especially in their education, adding that it was important to send  children to any E.N.T centre for screening at least once every month.

Other activities earmarked for the celebration include an inter-school spelling competition, funfair, homecoming, career and guidance talk, as well as an inter-school sports competition.

The climax of the 30th anniversary celebration is scheduled for Saturday, July 29 to be followed by a thanksgiving service on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the school’s premises.
