The contest is open to both individuals and organisations, and is meant to encourage the development of new applications with local ideas to suit the Ghanaian market.
The six-week long contest is open to both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaian residents who have a lot of knowledge in mobile and desktop application programming.
To win, entries should be unique, relevant and easy to use.
According to the General Manager of MTN Business, Mr Eric Nsako the challenge formed part of MTN's broader agenda to increase local content in the digital world.
The Head of Innovations of MTN, Mr Abdul Latif Issahaku, said there was about one million MTN subscribers with smart phones, which was why there was the need to create a mobile application bank to feed consumers with varied local content.
Winners of the contest will be rewarded with packages ranging from cash prizes to data-centric devices.
Mr Eyram Akofa Tawiah and Mr Edward Amartey-Tagoe, both successful local pioneers in software programmes challenged the youth to develop applications that would address worrying issues such as the heavy traffic congestion in town, water shortages among others.
They were, however, positive that the local applications would soon take over from the likes of facebook, twitter and WhatsApp.
