Misornu Safety Centre rallies support for IGP Yohonu, demands bold reforms
The Misornu Safety Centre has urged the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, to embark on far-reaching reforms within the Ghana Police Service to effectively address the country’s evolving security challenges.
In a statement signed by its Founder, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired) David Eklu, the Centre described Mr Yohonu’s appointment as a significant step towards building a more professional, accountable, and responsive police force. It further congratulated him on his appointment, describing it as a well-deserved recognition of his experience and dedication to public safety.
The Centre also commended President John Dramani Mahama for the bold and timely decision to reinforce the leadership of the Police Service, expressing confidence that the new IGP’s leadership would inspire transformative change.
“The Misornu Safety Centre is particularly hopeful that the new IGP will take a deeper look at what police reforms are appropriate and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders,” the statement noted.
It identified key areas that require urgent attention, particularly the need for a well-structured crime prevention strategy anchored on effective communication, transparency, and public engagement. The Centre stressed the importance of creating open channels for stakeholder dialogue and making transparency a guiding principle in police operations.
Furthermore, the Centre applauded the IGP’s initial efforts to enhance police-public relations and revive regular communication with the media and the public across various levels of the service. It, however, cautioned journalists and media practitioners against mounting undue pressure on Police Public Relations Officers (PROs) to disclose sensitive information that may jeopardize national security efforts.
Reaffirming its commitment to supporting the Police Administration, the Misornu Safety Centre pledged to collaborate with the new IGP in designing innovative, sustainable solutions aimed at transforming the Ghana Police Service into a proactive, community-oriented, and problem-solving institution.
