Prioritize your health, seek early treatment – UGMC Physician urges citizens

A Public Health Physician at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Dr Nana Esi Woode, has urged Ghanaians to take proactive steps to safeguard their health by seeking early medical care to prevent complications.

She made the call during a community health outreach and HIV/AIDS awareness programme, which included free health screening and a blood donation exercise, held at Ayigbe Town near UGMC on December 5, 2025.

The outreach programme forms part of UGMC’s broader efforts to promote community health awareness and empower citizens with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing.

The initiative brought together residents for education on preventive health practices and highlighted the importance of regular medical check-ups.

Speaking to Univers News, Dr Woode emphasized that ignorance of one’s health status increases the risk of developing advanced illnesses.

“My advice is that during this period, it’s important to know your health status. Don’t just sit at home and assume you are well. Get screened so that if any intervention is needed, it can be put in place early. This helps prevent disease progression, complications, and even death,” she said.

She further encouraged persons living with HIV/AIDS to stay informed about their health conditions and adhere strictly to treatment plans to improve health outcomes.

“Know your status. We have HIV self-testing kits available. You can visit a pharmacy or a nearby health facility. If you prefer screening at the facility, we will do that. If you want self-testing kits, they can be provided for use at home. If you test positive, visit a health facility for confirmation and treatment. HIV medications are available and free. Get screened, know your status, and get on treatment,” she added.
