Independence Day celebration

59th Independence anniversary parade

Ghana is celebrating 59 years after gaining independence from its Britain colonial masters on Sunday March 6, 2016.

This year’s national Independence Day celebration saw 1,200 school pupils drawn from selected schools in the Greater Accra Region to mark the anniversary at the Black Star Square in Accra.

The theme for the celebration “Investing in the Youth for Ghana’s Transformation” is aimed at channeling resources to equip the youth in being young entrepreneurs.

In attendance were the President of Guinea-Bissau, Jose Mario Vaz and President Uhuru Kenyata of Kenya. They joined President John Mahama for the anniversary.

Prayers were said by Nuumo Gbelenfo from Osu who prayed for peace, successful elections and stability.

Christian and Muslim prayers were also said asking for proper management of Ghana’s resources and also for God to soften the hearts of Ghanaians to abide by rules and regulations.

There were a variety of performances - dance, gymnastic, masquerades, marches, military and police displays.

An all-female dispatch riders of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service led by ASP Hajia Mohammed Sahadatu put up a splendid performance with their motorbikes.

Also in attendance was the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who was flanked by the acting Chairman of the party, Freddie Blay and the flagbearer of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet.

Former President's J.A. Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings were also in attendance.
