9 SDA members die in accident

Nine people — three children and six adults — who were members of the Meduma North Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Kumasi died in an accident last Saturday when the Sprinter Benz bus on which they were travelling was involved in an accident.

While four were suspected to have died on the spot, the remaining three died later on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Their remains have been deposited at the morgue of the KATH pending autopsy.

Nineteen others who sustained various degrees of injury were rushed  to nearby health facilities

The accident occured at Tano Odumase on the Agona-Mampong-Kumasi road in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Agona District Commander of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Francis Akwasi Asante, the deceased and those injured were all members of the SDA Church who were returning to Kumasi from the Mountain View Conference at Agona.

He said a taxi, in its attempt to overtake two buses, came face-to-face with an oncoming vehicle.

ASP Asante said, when the taxi driver tried to swerve away from the oncoming vehicle, he moved into the lane of the Sprinter Benz bus and the bus, in its efforts to avoid a collision, drove into a stationary truck.

“The Mazda also made matters worse when it ran into the back of the Sprinter, and both vehicles fell into a gutter,” he added.
