Ambassador Kojo Bonsu pledges stronger Ghana–China partnership after Mahama’s state visit
Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership between Ghana and China through enhanced trade, investment, and cooperation in key development sectors.
Speaking at the end of President John Dramani Mahama’s state visit to China, Ambassador Bonsu said Ghana’s engagement with China must now focus on practical and sustainable investments that deliver long-term benefits to citizens. “I am fully committed to deepening the relationship between Ghana and China and strengthening business, trade, and investments, especially in health, education, renewable energy, transportation, and agriculture,” he stated.
The ambassador emphasised that the visit had opened new doors for cooperation between the two countries, particularly in infrastructure, technology transfer, and industrial growth. He described the series of meetings and forums held in Beijing and Fujian Province as “a turning point for Ghana’s investment drive” and said the outcomes would be followed by concrete actions to attract more investors into strategic sectors of the economy.
President Mahama’s visit included bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, participation in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality, and the Ghana Investment Forum, which drew government officials, investors, and representatives from the private sector. Ambassador Bonsu and his team at the Ghanaian Embassy coordinated the engagements in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, led by Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
At the Ghana Investment Forum, President Mahama assured Chinese investors of Ghana’s commitment to creating a stable and business-friendly environment. Minister Ablakwa also reiterated the government’s determination to rebuild the economy and encourage value-added production. Ambassador Bonsu described the forum as a “critical platform to showcase Ghana’s investment potential and demonstrate government’s readiness to partner credible investors.”
The visit also took the Ghanaian delegation to Fujian Province, where President Mahama and Ambassador Bonsu held discussions with business leaders interested in establishing manufacturing and industrial operations in Ghana. The ambassador said such engagements were vital to promoting regional trade and supporting the government’s agenda of job creation through industrialisation.
Ambassador Bonsu noted that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Beijing would work closely with both governments to monitor the implementation of new cooperation agreements and ensure that the benefits reach ordinary Ghanaians. “Our goal is to make sure that every partnership we build translates into jobs, technology, and opportunities for our people,” he said.
The visit, which was President Mahama’s first official state engagement with China since returning to office, marked a renewed phase in bilateral relations between Accra and Beijing. Ambassador Bonsu said Ghana’s focus would remain on building partnerships that advance mutual growth and deepen the friendship between the two countries.
