Boards of three water bodies inaugurated
Three new boards for the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) have been sworn into office, with the task to help salvage the increasing pollution of Ghana’s water resources.

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, who inaugurated the boards, indicated that the pollution of water bodies was undermining the government’s resolve to provide safe, affordable water for all Ghanaians.
Members of the new boards, he stated, must work hard to reverse the trend.
Board members
Members of the GWCL board are Mr Kwaku Godwin Dovlo, the Managing Director of the company; Alhaji Ziblim Yakubu, the acting Chief Director at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing; Mr Timothy Nyame, Mr Seth Abbey, Mr Nuhu Mallam Sani, Ms Mona Hellen K. Quartey, Mr Ibrahim Tagrisu and Nana Ameyaw Kotoko II.
Mr Eric Biliguo Adama is the Chairman of the GWCL Board.
Members of the WRC Board are Mr Peter N. Hodason, Mr Rapheal Yeboah, Mr Carl Fiati, Dr J. A. Ampofo, Mr Simon A. Apio and Mr Ada Asomontsi.
The rest are Mr Huber Wusuasan, Mr Clement Bugase, Mr Godwin Dovlo, Mr Ben Ampomah and Mr Osei Owusu Sekyere.
The WRC Board has Professor Gyamfi Ampem as Chairman.

The CWSA Board has Mr Clement Bugase, Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, Demedeme Naa Lenason, Awudu Yakubu Modoc, Kwaku Godwin Dovlo, Opoku Atuahene, Nana Akua Aguei and Barbara Phyllis Barnes Koli as members.
Nana Danso Agyei II is the Chairman of the CWSA Board.
WRC must protect water bodies
After members of the WRC board had taken the oaths of office and secrecy, Alhaji Dauda advised them to bring their rich experiences to bear on the fortunes of the water sector.
“I wish to draw your attention to the fact that you are taking offices as members of the board of the commission at a time when the water resources of this country have come under serious threat,” he stressed.
He said the board must work hard to address encroachment in and around the Weija Treatment Plant and other water bodies to reduce the cost of treatment.
“Fresh water resources constitute one of our most vital resources as a nation. The need to regulate, protect and harness the resources and put them to judicious use for our own benefit are the reasons for setting up the WRC,” Alhaji Dauda stated.
GWCL to raise funds for expansion
Controlling non-revenue water, according to Alhaji Dauda, would help the GWCL improve its revenue and reduce its dependence on the government for expansion projects and operations.
Currently, 68 per cent of urban dwellers have access to potable water, meaning about a third of urban dwellers do not have access to potable water.
Alhaji Dauda said the government had initiated a number of programmes designed to boost urban water supply in the coming years.
CWSA to increase rural water supply
The minister charged members of the new CWSA board to commit themselves to increasing rural water coverage to ensure that more people in rural Ghana had access to potable water.
He expressed his disappointment at what he described as the rather poor coverage in the area of sanitation.
Nana Gyamfi Ampem expressed appreciation to the government for the confidence reposed in the members and pledged to stir his fellow board members to address the issues negatively affecting the sector.

“We appreciate the enormity of the problems but we believe they are surmountable. My colleagues and I will ensure that vital water bodies are protected,” he stated.
