Fire sweeps through Kumasi Central market

More than 50 shops were destroyed by an eight-hour fire blaze at the Kumasi Central Market Friday morning as mostly women wailed in reaction to the loss of their wares.

The fire started around 2am at the 31st portion of the market which houses mostly plastic products and guinea fowls.

It completely raised down almost everything in the area. It took fire service personnel nearly six hours to extinguish the fire.

It was the second fire outbreak to hit the market this year and the sixth in the city after similar ones at Roman Hill, two slums at Santasi and Dagonba Line near Anloga Junction and Mbrom.

The cause of the fire is unknown but sources at the scene told Graphic Online they suspected a trader from the plastic sellers end who has a penchant for leaving fire unattended after cooking might have started the fire.
