Ghanaian Community in Russia confers with new Ambassador

The Ghanaian community in Russia has engaged Ghana’s new Ambassador to Russia, Dr Koma Steem Jehu-Appiah, in a dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and improving the welfare of Ghanaians living in Russia.

The meeting, held at the Ghana Embassy in Moscow, went beyond a courtesy visit and evolved into a productive discussion covering trade, education, and migration.

Led by its President, Ebenezer Wepari, the Ghanaian diaspora delegation was at the Embassy to formally congratulate the Ambassador on his appointment and to welcome him to his new role.

Commendation

Mr Wepari commended Ambassador Jehu-Appiah for accepting the responsibility of leading Ghana’s mission in the Russian Federation.

He expressed confidence in the Ambassador’s ability to deepen cooperation between the two countries, noting that his prior medical training in Russia provides him with a unique understanding of the country and its people.

“Our community is greatly encouraged by your appointment.

Your experience here gives you an advantage in advancing the interests of both Ghana and Ghanaians in Russia,” Mr Wepari said

Discussion

The discussions focused on key issues of mutual importance.

On bilateral relations, both sides explored ways to build on the existing partnership between Ghana and Russia, particularly in areas such as diplomacy, trade, and cultural exchange.

They agreed that the Ghanaian Embassy, working with the diaspora, could play a crucial role in facilitating greater cooperation and understanding between the two nations.

On business and investment, the delegation expressed interest in helping Ghanaian entrepreneurs identify opportunities within the Russian market while also encouraging Russian investors to explore prospects in Ghana.

Education was another major theme.

The two sides discussed expanding access to higher education opportunities for Ghanaian students in Russia and strengthening academic partnerships between universities in both countries.

Mr Wepari underscored the need for greater awareness of scholarship opportunities available to Ghanaian students.

On migration, members of the community raised issues concerning the legal status and welfare of Ghanaians in Russia.

Ambassador Jehu-Appiah assured the group of his commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all Ghanaian nationals in the federation.

In his closing remarks, Mr Jehu-Appiah thanked the delegation for the warm welcome and reaffirmed his readiness to work closely with the Ghanaian community to promote the country’s interests.

“I’m aware of the vital role the diaspora plays as key partners in national development, and I pledge that you will have the full support of my office for your initiatives and concerns,” he said.

The Ambassador pledged to support efforts aimed at stimulating trade and creating wealth for both countries.
