GIS intercepts cocoa beans concealed in gallons at Ave-Havi border

The Akanu Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted a truck loaded with cocoa beans being smuggled out of the country to Togo. 

With the support of some officers of the Ghana Revenue Authority-Customs Division, the Immigration officers seized the consignment concealed in 1,115 gallons found in the truck at the Ave-Havi border post.

A statement confirming the operation issued by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the GIS, Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, said the operation was successful, as the officers, acting on intelligence, waylaid the truck, with registration number AS 2103 -W, driven by Ibrahim Fatawu. 

All the seized cocoa beans have been handed over to officials of the COCOBOD while the truck has been impounded and the driver assisting in further investigations.

Supt Amoako-Atta on behalf of the GIS, commended members of the border community for their collaboration and support in protecting Ghana’s borders.

He re-emphasised the GIS’s resolve and commitment to protecting the country’s borders and preventing cross-border crimes, and encouraged border residents and the general public to collaborate by sharing information and reporting any suspicious incidents.

“The GIS remains resolute in the protection of our borders and prevention of cross-border crimes.

“Border residents and the general public are also applauded for continuously collaborating with the service through information-sharing.

“Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious persons and activities to the GIS and other security agencies in line with the “See Something, Say Something campaign,” the statement concluded.
