Grandmaster Godwin Avenorgbo has passed away

The death is reported of broadcasting icon, Godwin Avenorgbo, in Accra. He was 78.

The Grandmaster, as he was affectionately known, is said to have died on Monday after a sudden illness. Confirming the news, a statement from his family from Sokpoe in the Volta Region said his sudden death occurred on Monday.

"It is with deep sorrow that the Avenorgbo and allied families announce the passing of our beloved Godwin Avenorgbo (The Grandmaster). "He departed peacefully, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever remain in our hearts.

"The family kindly asks for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the statement said. It further indicated that the funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.

He is survived by his wife,  Aimee Avenorgbo and children Jerry Avenorgbo, Cleopatra and Chester Avenorgbo.

Broadcaster extraordinaire

Affectionately known as The Grandmaster, Mr Avenorgbo was a former broadcaster who worked with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) until his retirement.  

He honed his talent and skill as a master of ceremony (MC) for many national events and for a long time, one of the most popular voices, known for his baritone voice and command of both language and his act.

Indeed, for years, his voice became synonymous with the National Farmers Day celebration which he moderated with ease and unique style.

Until his death, he was the Director of Communications for the Melcom Group of Companies.

Mr Avenorgbo made his name in broadcasting in the studios of GBC. Despite having retired for nearly two decades, he remained active in the media space, mentoring many people in broadcasting.

He remained an active member of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) serving the GJA as the Chairman of the GJA anniversary planning committee. The Grandmaster was last seen publicly at the GJA's 75th anniversary event on August 15, as the GJA held the anniversary lecture at the La Palm Beach Resort.
