Karpower provides educational tour for TTU Engineering students

Some students of the Engineering Department of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) have spent a day’s educational tour aboard the Karpowership facility.

The tour, facilitated by the power producers, Karpowership Ghana, for beneficiaries of its scholarship scheme, was to commemorate this year’s International Day of Education.

The International Day of Education, a UNESCO initiative marked annually on January 24, was celebrated this year on the theme: “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education”.

The theme highlights the critical role young people play as active partners in shaping inclusive, relevant, and future-ready education systems.

In line with this global call, the Powership tour was designed to place students at the centre of the learning experience by exposing them to real-life power generation operations.

The initiative enabled the engineering students to deepen their understanding of classroom concepts while engaging directly with industry professionals, effectively bridging the gap between theory and practice.

During the tour, students were taken through various aspects of power generation and engineering operations aboard the Powership.

Technical personnel provided detailed explanations on systems and processes, while engaging students in interactive discussions and responding to questions.

Empowerment

Speaking during the tour, the Communications Manager of Karpowership Ghana, Sandra Amarquaye, said the initiative reflected the company’s belief that education was most impactful when young people were actively involved in shaping their own learning journeys.

She said the company’s commemoration of the International Day of Education formed part of its broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which prioritised education as a catalyst for sustainable development.

Ms Amarquaye also stated that through its scholarship scheme, mentorship programmes, and experiential learning engagements, the company continued to support inclusive and equitable education, while empowering young people to actively participate in shaping their future — reflecting the true spirit of this year’s International Day of Education theme.

“The International Day of Education reminds us that young people are not just beneficiaries of education, but key partners in co-creating it.

By opening our operations to these students, we are giving them the opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with industry practice and prepare meaningfully for the future,” she said.

She added that Karpowership Ghana’s approach to education extended beyond financial support, focusing on exposure, mentorship and practical learning.

“Our scholarship scheme is not only about funding education.

It is about empowering young people with the confidence, skills and real-world exposure they need to become problem-solvers and contributors to Ghana’s development,” Ms Amarquaye noted.

Practical Learning Experience

The Coordinator of Women in Engineering (WinE) at Takoradi Technical University, Hawa Assanpong, commended Karpowership Ghana for strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.

“This visit has given the students practical insight into how power generation works, while also exposing them to safety and environmental standards within the industry. Experiences like this help deepen their understanding beyond the classroom,” she said.

A Level 300 Electrical Engineering student of TTU, Faustina Fianudzu, described the visit as a transformative learning experience.

“This tour has helped me appreciate how the concepts we learn in class are applied in real-world engineering practice,” she said.

Ms Fianudzu added that interacting with engineers and a female chemist on board the Powership renewed her motivation and confidence in pursuing a career in engineering.

She also expressed gratitude to Karpowership Ghana for the scholarship support, which continued to play a key role in her academic journey.
