Mahama, Xi pledge stronger Ghana-China ties

President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, as part of his visit to China.

At the meeting attended by ministers of state and senior government officials from both countries, President Mahama expressed the confidence that the bilateral and trade relations between Ghana and China would further blossom during his tenure.

The President said the relationship would bring progress to Ghana and the rest of Africa.
President Mahama recalled the cordial relations between the two countries, which dated back to the eras of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and the Chinese Leader, General Mao Ji Dong, and Prime Minister Tsu Enlai, saying the relations had since been elevated to a strategic partnership.

He acknowledged the tremendous efforts of President Xi in championing issues of women.

President Mahama said those efforts must help the rapid implementation of the Beijing Declaration in 1995 and the Platform for Action.

He expressed worry that global multilateralism was giving way to unilateralism by many countries, and for those countries that believed in multilateralism, it was time to show solidarity with one another.

The President expressed gratitude to President Xi for inviting him to participate in the Global Leadership Meeting on Women in Beijing and for sending a high-powered delegation to his inauguration on January 7 this year.

President Xi confident

For his part, President Xi expressed confidence in the leadership of President Mahama to protect all lawful investments in Ghana, stressing, "You can invest in Ghana, and all genuine businesses will be protected."

In that respect, the Chinese Leader declared that the 2026 China-Africa People-to-People Investment Exchange would start in Ghana.
