The family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings has announced the funeral arrangements for the former First Lady, who will be laid to rest on Friday, November 28, 2025.
The funeral ceremony will take place at Independence Square in Accra, starting at 6 a.m. with the arrival of the cortege.
Addressing the media yesterday to confirm the details of the final funeral rites, the Akomfrohene of the Manhyia Palace and Head of the Agyeman family, Oheneba Akwesi Abeyie, emphasised that the ceremony on November 28 would be the final funeral rites, and the family looks forward to paying their last respects to a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the country's history.
He said the general public was invited to participate in the funeral ceremony, which promised to be a grand celebration of the life and legacy of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
He stated that the attire for the funeral would be all black.
Gratitude
Following her death on October 23, individuals, organisations and many other well-wishers have thronged the home of the Rawlingses to express their sympathy.
Oheneba Abeyie at the press conference, on behalf of the family, expressed their gratitude to the public, security, and political officials for their prayers, support and the outpouring of sympathy.
State burial
President John Dramani Mahama, reacting to the news, announced a three-day national mourning in her memory.
On November 6, the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, issued a statement to announce that the former First Lady would be given a state burial to honour her legacy as the Matriarch of the Fourth Republic.
The ceremony, the statement said, would be held under the auspices of the President, to celebrate the life and legacy of a woman whose name became synonymous with women’s empowerment, child welfare, and grassroots development.
Tribute
Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings, 76, became Ghana’s First Lady during her husband’s first tenure as Head of State in 1979, and again from 1981 to 2001, spanning both military and democratic administrations.
In 1982, she established the 31st December Women’s Movement, leading the charge for women’s empowerment, both politically and economically.
Also in 2012, Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) after parting ways with the National Democratic Congress.
She would again make history in 2016 as the first woman to vie for the Presidency when she led the NDP as its Presidential Candidate during the general election.
