Tema roads in shambles - Residents cry out for relief
The city of Tema, known for its vibrant markets and bustling ports, is facing a major crisis.
Its roads, which are the lifeblood of the city's economy, have deteriorated significantly, leaving residents frustrated and concerned about their safety.
The 7-kilometre stretch from the VALCO Roundabout to Kpone via the Tema Oil Refinery road, a vital artery that connects the city's industrial area to the Kpone Katamanso Municipality, is in a deplorable state.
Similarly, the VALCO Roundabout to the Motorway interchange and some sections of Mankoadzi Roundabout to Tema Newtown roads are also in dire need of repairs.
Nightmare
Some residents who spoke to the Daily Graphic expressed frustration over the situation and urged the government to take immediate action.
"It's like a nightmare every time I step out," Richard Nkansah, a resident who lives near Vienna City in Tema Community 8, said.
"The potholes are so deep, they're damaging our cars and could cause an accident," he added.
A tanker driver, Abdul Nasiru, echoed similar sentiments, saying that the road's poor condition had been a major concern for years, causing damage to vehicles, increasing travel times, and affecting the city's economy.
Government response
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Ebi Bright, acknowledged the concerns and assured residents that the assembly was working to address the challenges.
She emphasised that the TOR Road was the lifeline of the city and that its repair was crucial to the city’s economic survival.
The assembly, she said, had assembled a team of experts to devise a plan to reconstruct the road, and a significant investment would be made to complete the project.
She noted that while the construction process might cause inconvenience to commuters and businesses, she expressed optimism that the end result would be worth the temporary disruption.
Inner roads to benefit
The MCE said the assembly also planned to use its district road improvement programme to reshape some of the inner roads, making them easier to navigate.
"By taking a phased approach, the assembly aims to create a more efficient and sustainable road network that will support the city's growth and development.
Meanwhile, residents were hopeful that the government's efforts would be timely delivered to bring relief to commuters in the city and improve their quality of life.
