Volta Region NHIA exceeds coverage target

The Volta Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) achieved its highest coverage since the inception of the scheme last year, exceeding its coverage target for the year.

The office targeted 1,742,806 population in coverage in the region, but reached 1,798,099 people, representing 103.2 per cent of its 2025 target.

The effort placed the region fourth among the regions in the year under review.

The Volta Regional Director of the NHIA, Susan Chobbah, said this at the Volta Regional Annual Performance Review Meeting and Awards Ceremony of the NHIA in Ho.

The event was on the theme: Universal Health Coverage Achieved – Celebrating Excellence, Expanding Access to Quality Healthcare.

Teamwork

Ms Chobbah attributed the success story to teamwork and enthusiasm among the NHIA staff and the unwavering support of stakeholders.

“This is the highest coverage since the inception of the scheme in the region 23 years ago,” she said.

Ms Chobbah said the NHIA in the region was highly encouraged by the recent establishment of new offices in the Ho West and North Dayi districts and ongoing efforts to extend services to the Akatsi North, Adaklu, Afadzato South, North Tongu, South and Central Tongu areas.

“These expansions reflect our commitment to bringing health care closer to the people,” she maintained and pledged to work harder to ensure many more had access to quality health care.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, urged the staff of the NHIA to recommit themselves to the success of the Primary Health Programme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

Renew energy

He indicated that the success of the initiatives required renewed energy, diligence, and integrity to ensure their effective execution, adding that the success largely depended on the implementers at the frontline.

“The people we serve are counting on us, and we must not fail them,” Dr Bampoe insisted.

Dr Bampoe gave an assurance that the government would remain firmly committed to strengthening the health sector through various key interventions critical to advancing Universal Health Coverage by removing financial barriers and improving access to essential healthcare services.

Welfare

Dr Bampoe pledged to apply human-centred policies and programmes that would transform not only the scheme but also the staff who were the critical human resources behind the success story of the authority.

“Your welfare, professional growth, and motivation remain a top priority because when staff are empowered and inspired, the scheme thrives,” he explained.

Regional Minister

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, stressed that the focus of the National Health Insurance Scheme was not only to expand coverage but also to ensure prompt claims payment, leveraging digital systems to enhance efficiency and transparency.

He said the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) remained committed to supporting NHIA to reach remote communities, while addressing challenges that affect service delivery.

Prizes were awarded to deserving workers and outstanding districts.
