About the summit

The three-day summit is expected to help address the unemployment problem, especially among the youth and graduates from the country’s tertiary institutions.

It is scheduled from April 15 to 17 at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), and is being organised under the auspices of the National Tripartite Committee with financial and technical support from the ILO.

Participating countries include South Africa, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Addressing unemployment issues in the country

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Nii Armah Ashietey, who inaugurated the committee, said to ascertain the magnitude of the unemployment situation in Ghana, the ministry had set up a task force on Labour Market Information System (LMIS) which was expected to come up with statistics pertaining to unemployment issues.

“It is expected that this will aid development planning in the country and better link job seekers to job providers,” he added.

He said in the coming years, skills training institutions under the Employment ministry would be revamped.

“The ministry is in the process of securing a £35 million funding to retool the 34 National Vocational Training Institutes (NVTI) and Integrated Community Centres for Employable Skills (ICCES) in the country.”

Nii Ashietey said it was expected that by retooling the skills training institutes, graduates produced by them would have better skills that would easily facilitate their employment.

He indicated that the ministry would work towards the implementation of the Graduate Business Support Scheme (GEBSS) for which funding was being sought to finance numerous business proposals that had been submitted by tertiary graduates.
