He announced his resignation during the launch of his memoirs on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi.

In a statement signed by himself he said “I am happy at the strides made in the area of peace and development as well as the enduring legacy recorded during the period, ”

He expressed gratitude to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11, Nananom of the Kumasi Traditional Council as well as staff of the Metropolitan Assembly and the people of Kumasi for their support and cooperation during his tenure of office.

“I wish the government well and I will continue to give off my best to ensure the re-election of President Mahama in the upcoming elections”, he added.

Background

The Kumasi Traditional Council, the highest decision-making body in the Asanteland, petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to replace the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kojo Bonsu, for slighting the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and bringing his office into disrepute.

The angry chiefs, at a crunch meeting held last Monday at the Manhyia Palace, unanimously accused Mr Bonsu of insubordination and disrespect towards them.

The brouhaha stemmed from the decision by the KMA boss to write a letter to question the authority of Nana Agyenim Boateng, the Amoamanhene, who was appointed by Otumfuo Osei Tutu to represent the chiefs on a committee that was to supervise the construction of the Kejetia project.
