Osino schoolchildren participate in reading festival

The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Fanteakwa District, in collaboration with the World Vision, has organised a reading festival for primary schoolchildren at Osino in the Eastern Region.

Funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the reading festival is to whip up the children's interest in reading.

The Reading Project Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of World Vision, Mr Eric Opoku, said the project aimed at improving the reading skills of the children.

“The children are brought together and taught how to read. During the festival the children come together to showcase what they have learnt for their parents to appreciate,” he stated.

It is expected that by 2018 more than 20,000 children in the Fanteakwa District would have improved their reading skills, he added.

Reading project

The Fanteakwa District Director of Education, Mr Felli Jacob Alagiwe, said the reading project would cover 109 schools in the district.

He urged parents to show more interest in their children's education and, noted that most often when parents sent their children to school they did not find out how their children were faring.

That, he said, was not the best because parents’ contributions were key in the education of children.

Mr Alagiwe observed that when one did not know how to read and write it made living in society difficult and stressed that it was important for parents to send their children to school.

World Vision commended

The Fanteakwa District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Charles Oware Tweneboa, commended World Vision for the support to the education sector in the district and also for its contribution to good sanitation in the area.

Mr Oware Tweneboa entreated parents to take advantage of the government's free senior high school (SHS) policy to send their children to school.
