He had fired two warning shots from to ward off some youth of Tinka Island, an area notorious for illicit drugs in Kumasi whom he suspected were threatening to attack him, but a third shot hit Salawu Salla who was initially rushed to the Manhyia Hospital but was referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
According to an eye witness, the former assembly member had organised a clean-up exercise for the area and asked that the gutters be fumigated.
The witness said when the fumigation team got to the residence of one Mallam, he, Mallam restrained the team from spraying the frontage of his house, insisting that when the gutters are sprayed the mosquitoes would enter his house.
The source said when Yakub heard that Mallam was preventing the people from spraying the front of his house he rushed to the scene and upon confirming the resistance, he demanded explanations but a section of the youth allegedly attempted to attack him.
But a second witness said the firing of the registered gun by Yakub was needless and that it served only as a show of force.
