Resolve Gomoa East and Awutu Senya East dispute
The President of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council, Obirifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, has appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) to quickly resolve boundary disputes between the Gomoa East District and Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly.
According to him, failure on the part of both assemblies to respect their boundaries could lead to unnecessary confrontation.
He has, therefore, charged the MLGRD to enforce the Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that established the Gomoa East District Assembly in 2007, to prevent any misunderstanding in the disputed areas.
Press conference
Addressing a press conference last Wednesday on a wide range of issues, Obirifo Ankobea said the non-enforcement of the LI had enabled the Awutu Senya East Assembly, with its capital at Kasoa, to illegally operate in the eastern part of the Gomoa East District.
The press conference was attended by divisional chiefs, sub-chiefs and queenmothers who were clad in red and black cloths apparently to express their displeasure about recent happenings in the area due to the boundary disputes.
The event was in response to a recent directive by the Gomoa East District Chief Executive, Mr Jonamoah Moses Jehu-Appiah, that some billboards of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Ms Mavis Hawa Koomson, be removed since they had been mounted within Gomoa East District.
Some sympathisers of the MP, who were not happy about it, stormed the offices of the Gomoa East Assembly in the absence of the DCE to protest against the removal of the billboards.
Obirifo Ankobea stressed that areas such as Sapato, Doctor Jesus, Lawyer, Winger and Estate were all within the Gomoa East District but had been taken over by the Awutu Senya East Assembly, noting that the current situation was affecting efforts by the assembly to mobilise internally generated funds for development.
He explained that there was clear violation of the L.I. that established the Gomoa East District Assembly by the Awutu Senya Assembly, which had effected the provision of essential services for the people of the aforementioned areas.
He added that the settling of the boundary dispute between the two assemblies would stop the use of ‘thugs’ to attack and prevent staff of the Gomoa East Assembly from carrying out its legitimate duties.
“Any attempt by the MCE for Awutu Senya East and MP for the area to operate illegally within the Gomoa East District would be fiercely resisted by the chiefs of Gomoa,” he pointed out.
Antseadze water project
He commended the government for the execution of the Antseadze water project which had enabled many communities in the area to have access to potable water.
